Magnetoreception in a freshwater ciliate arises from endosymbiosis
The endosymbiotic bacteria produce magnetite crystals, allowing the protist to move efficiently in stratified waters

Pleased to share that our paper on Plasmodium NEK4 is now published in @natcomms.nature.com.
We show that NEK4 act as a key regulator coupling meiotic entry with cytoskeletal morphogenesis, coordinating microtubule formation and nuclear dynamics in malaria parasites.

Thank you so much to everyone who made it to #BSP2026 in beautiful, sunny Glasgow!!! (We asked the weather to behave while everyone was around)! The @bspparasitology.bsky.social 2027 meeting will be in Cardiff! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves! Like Glasgow, People Make #Parasitology! 🥳🧬🧫🔬
New preprint! We identified many components that localize to the structure involved in "eating" in a marine organism.

As I set up the lab, I am looking to host motivated postdocs & students. We can explore potential funding routes together, primarily JSPS Fellowships (www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-fe...), and evaluate other scholarship/grant options. If interested, my DMs are open—please reach out! (3/3)
Our Spring meeting starts today in Glasgow! All the best to all those presenting @bspparasitology.bsky.social
I plan to expand and apply my previous research findings to uncover new biological insights into these fascinating parasites. You can see my research background and past publications here: researchmap.jp/ryanase?lang... (2/3)
I have officially started my new position as a Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) 🇯🇵. My new research group will focus on the cell/molecular biology of parasitic Excavata & amoebae (incl. Trypanosoma, Naegleria, Acanthamoeba, & more) (1/3)
