perhaps did not clock that by going to a gig in manchester on a bank holiday I have to pay this much a fortune on train to manchester, staying in manchester, on a bank holiday. pain. (the museums are free tho)
(& when people say everyone should have to use real names, they are thinking about - in good faith - harmful content from anons, not fandom or sex work. But there ARE good reasons to not use real names on the internet goddammit, what a flip around this is on recommended internet use c.15 years ago!)
liking olivia's 'stupid song' especially the 'nobody's wanted somebody more' bit
Saw the yougov poll and just have to accept I'm way out of step with most people on approval/disapproval of social media ban for under 16s then.
I guess I have to concede that what I have in mind is 'social media 1.0 where it was actually talking to people you knew, not algo content feed', which made me.
also, of course: what is social media, a thornier question than might first be realised. is it going to be algorithm content stuff only. will the kids retvrn to Bebo.
they evil gremlin in my brain: obviously nobody is thinking about tumblr for this ban because nobody is ever thinking about tumblr, but it does have an optional algorithm feed now and would this mean the teens writing bad x reader fic in my current fandom would be banned great yes ban them all
And what most people are thinking of is 'short form video and the algorithm serving up slop'. And maybe we need to look at the harms of the algorithm and endless short form video(!), but unfortunately that's too hard to separate out so it's just: ban on all social media!
Looking at a good housekeeping recipe book from the 90s to get some ideas and they were definitely assuming you had a full drinks cabinet back then because every single recipe is like whack in some sherry! now add the marsala!
Welcome to the UK, where soon 17-year-olds will be legally allowed to drive, join the army, work a full-time job, have sex and even vote but not watch YouTube past their bedtime.
