You might be using the phrase differently? When I take the lane, I ride directly in the center of the lane. That keeps me away from oncoming traffic and the door zone.
It’s “taking the lane” as opposed to riding in the gutter or the door zone.

Taking the lane gives plenty of space for two cyclists to ride next to each other. Motorcyclists should wait until it’s safe to pass by changing lanes the same way that cars do.
I genuinely don’t know how you could have misconstrued my comment to arrive at that conclusion. I ride to maximize my safety and the safety of the people around me. Safety comes before efficiency.
I don’t think that holds up. The Supreme Court made this decision, not the First Amendment. They pick and choose when to extend 1A protections based on which side they want to win.

If you can’t pass someone without crashing into them, you shouldn’t pass them. You have to follow that rule just like everyone else on the road does.
