As sometime who likes it, I'd describe it as resembling garlic banana custard. There's definitely a sulphurous component to the aroma and flavour.
I love durian and love the smell (because it promises deliciousness). But until I'd had it for the first time, the smell was also very offensive to me.
So from anecdotal personal experience, I'd say it's probably not genetic
