The Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census has discovered 1,121 new marine species across 13 global expeditions in 2025. As much as 90% of life is thought to remain unknown. That's why it's so important to take precaution and to continue learning how to best protect the deep-sea!

The intervention calls for alignment of activities across conventions (UNCLOS, CBD, BBNJ and human rights treaties), as well as across global assessments (IPCC, IPBES, WOA), exercising the precautionary principle, considering diverse research in decision making, and financing ocean-based solutions.
