Dear Bluesky folk, What are your favourite nature-quest non-fiction books? I'm writing a piece about this peculiar sub-genre. My own The Butterfly Isles is one but there's also Much Ado About Mothing, The Orchid Hunter, Orchid Summer, Chasing the Ghost. There must be loads of others I'm missing!
It's certainly shaping up to be a good year for Painted Lady in the UK, reflecting @chrisvanswaay.eurosky.social's observations in the Netherlands. Last week in Kent I saw both translucent, presumably migrant insects, and mint-fresh newly emerged individuals. Today, in Shetland, a tatty insect.
Some of my happiest European butterfly-watching moments over the years have come exploring the countryside of North Greece, finding new sites for the likes of Large Copper, Sandy Grizzled Skipper, Iolas Blue and Freyer's Purple Emperor. I can't wait to return in 2027 with @mariposanature.bsky.social

If there was an award for ‘Most Outstanding Foliage’ in our native flora, I’d nominate Sea Kale. I just love it. Highly sculptural, succulent and steely-blue, it piles up into wonderful neat mounds like here on Deganwy beach. Oh… and it’s edible too #wildfoliagehour

Plants are the powerhouse of life, providing food, shelter, oxygen, medicine and immeasurable joy. But we’re so animal-centric we ignore them, or relegate them to mere background. What a wasted opportunity.

Our Butterflies of North Greece group enjoyed a fabulous day of montane #butterflies yesterday, with highlights being Yellow-banded Skipper & Blue Argus, followed by a most enjoyable evening meal, joined for it by our local friend Nikos.
