The premise has to be skewed, otherwise the hive mind would not work as an antagonist. And they wanted it to be an antagonist.
Since humans as individuals destroy the planet, the hive mind (im a benevolent form) would be a real solution. But for the show, it needed to be threatening - and failing.
The hive mind could express thought processes on a cosmological scale. Maybe even enjoy having a conversation with a single human mind (while still wanting to convert her).
Instead we get too dumb to live hive mind.
Rick and Morty has flaws, but their depiction of a hive mind was more interesting.
