They’d rather the country be poorer and whiter than rich and diverse. Of course when the pie shrinks, the rich will demand the same amount and will tell you the crumbs you’re left with are because of immigrants or trans people or DEI. bsky.app/profile/apne...
I feel like this is a take I keep seeing with increasing frequency. It’s not like someone forces you to read a book or go to a movie. You can opt out if you want.
What an incredibly obtuse thing for a writer to say. Whether or not you’re deliberately injecting some overt Message, your worldview suffuses your narrative. It can’t not.
I mean I just can't even find words. The US defense secretary helping plan a massive, destabilizing surprise war - a war the US has immediately LOST - and then using his insider knowledge to make stock bets so he can personally get rich? Hard to think of worse corruption, anywhere, ever.
Again, I ask: if Trump was paid by a foreign dictatorship to destroy America’s power, influence and democracy from the inside, what would he do differently?
This is called “strategic defeat.” You have ended up in a worse position than before you began, with your adversary, while battered, emerging in a stronger position than before.
Nothing says “support the troops” like kidnapping their family while also starting a pointless war.
just saying: it's possible that "I'm gonna dramatically constrict my state capacity while plotting dramatic imperial expansion, and expanding my set of internal enemies while alienating most of my foreign allies" is the beginning of a world-historical masterstroke. but also possible that it isn't

Green-card holders no longer qualify for loans from the Small Business Administration, eliminating a longtime source of financing for immigrants that advocates say will discourage job creation and harm the economy.
Four-byline alert: 🚨
“.. A broker for Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary, attempted to make a big investment in major defence companies in the weeks leading up to the US-Israeli attack on Iran, according to three people familiar with the matter.”

Everything I write, and everything I don’t write, has political subtext. Everything.
New: The White House is signaling that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is not a must-have to end the Iran War, potentially setting the stage for Iran to continue to flex its strategic position over one of the world's busiest oil shipping channels for the foreseeable future
"ICE agents will be stationed outside graduation events for the nation’s newest Marines to identify whether any of their family members are undocumented, according to the Marine Corps."
This is a humiliating defeat for the United States and the rest of the world will definitely take note, regardless of who is president in the future.

As the U.S. continues to fight the war in Iran, the Marine Corps has boosted protection measures on bases, requiring everyone to present REAL IDs, passports or birth certificates to access any sites.
Ryan J. Reilly “paints a vivid and urgent portrait of… disarray”

“.. Trump told aides he’s willing to end the U.S. military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed .. likely extending Tehran’s firm grip on the waterway and leaving a complex operation to reopen it for a later date.”
