Americans go to Europe: amazed at convenient public transportation and cheap health care.
Europeans go to America: amazed at the copious junk food.
Not sure why this would be surprising. Humans are social creatures; most of us need to be around others enough of the time to feel a sense of social connection. It seems utterly unsurprising to me that too much isolation at home would increase depression and lonliness.
I have always preferred en-dashes, personally. I wonder if the em-dash paranoia has seeped into en-dashes?
I don't feel panicky when I think about the issue. I feel calm and reasonable. I have spent a lot of time thinking about the harmful effects of social media over the past several years. I have observed the effects on my own children and the students I teach. I have read and reflected a lot.
I also find myself annoyed in these discussions when someone suggests that the concern over social media is just a moral panic. It sounds dismissive and condescending. Declaring a moral panic means you don't need to bother responding to other people's concerns; they are by definition unreasonable.
