#PretendPanel June 6: This is the actual essence of worldbuilding, not cramming a story full of lore. As such it's an immense question, and I've no idea how to answer it briefly! 😅 So instead I'll give you a snippet, and say a bit more about the craft of integrating those details. 🧵

I start big and go smaller, #pretendpanel. I plan first, but I keep it vague and categorical enough that I'm not boxing myself in. The true shape of the story shows itself between the cracks in the plan. 1/2

#PretendPanel 6/6: I'm going to pick my top five little details from #TSWBOO: 1) Ghathi Theater This is a form of underwater opera/ballet in Reshketh culture that is meant to by physically felt as well as seen and heard. Tarek introduces Jenna to it via 3D recording and she LOVES it.

This is a wordy prompt! Who came up with this! In my world there are two long established gods, a spider god and a cactus goddess, who grant Voices, (humans who speak for and to them), magical gifts. One of my MCs is a Voice of the spider god, Mowe. 1/2 #pretendpanel

It's been really interesting reading everyone's responses to this. I think a lot of people feel similarly to how I do; it's not always joyful (what is, really?) but that joy is a core component of creating, and when it's not there, it's so much harder, if not impossible. #PretendPanel

Joy is HUGE for me! Writing isn't always easy, but even when it's challenging I'm always happy to be doing it. I know lots of writers are fond of talking and meme-ing about how we don't *really* enjoy writing, but I do. No-one's making me do this. I do it because I fucking love it. 🏷️ #PretendPanel
