I figured it out. Not quite exhaustive but there are 3 interfaces for playing videos: thread, menu, and player, and 2 different ways to get to the player

Double tap: react (+ stop video + continue audio??)
Long press: react + menu (+ play in menu/continue playing in menu)
Download button: download
While playing in thread
Single tap anywhere: stop video
While playing in menu
Single tap anywhere: open video player
While not playing
Single tap near play button: play video
Single tap anywhere else: open video player + play video from start
If you accidentally started playing in thread, tap again to stop video, wait a moment, and then tap outside the play button
