Schools have finally been recognised as critical fuel users after pressure from NZEI Te Riu Roa, but educators say the Government still isn’t going far enough.
With all this extreme weather, a powerful piece from Newsroom highlights the reality for schools — once the mud is cleared, they’re still left covering the damage, costs, and disruption.
Unequal Treatment in the Māori Curriculum Consultation Must Change!
Running the government is a lot like playing recorder – it doesn’t work if you suck. #makeitstop by letting those in power know just how many people care about primary education in NZ. Share this film, sign our petition, or just make some noise for teachers & educators at makeitstop.co.nz
Today more than 700 NZEI Te Riu Roa learning support specialists have launched a legal challenge against the Ministry of Education over pay deductions made during last year’s industrial action.
Every second Friday, veteran teacher Jo Patrick stands outside the Education Minister's electorate office with a recorder and one clear message: "Stop undervaluing us."
The Government will introduce legislation by August to weaken Te Tiriti o Waitangi clauses in the Education and Training Act and other key statutes, dismantling decades of progress toward an equitable, bicultural education system.
NZEI Te Riu Roa is calling on the Government to properly recognise the role of schools in disaster response and recovery, and to provide the staffing, resourcing and long-term mental health support our communities need.
Calls are mounting across the education sector for the Government to pause its rushed curriculum reforms. A joint statement to the Minister of Education opposing the hurried and poorly designed reforms is gaining momentum, with educators and peak bodies backing calls for an immediate pause.
The school year has begun without critical specialist literacy support for many tamariki. The loss of Resource Teachers in literacy and Māori is leaving vulnerable learners without the tailored help they need, and is driving experienced teachers out of the profession and overseas.
