Most people remember the "other" birds associated with Charles Darwin. You know, the Galapagos "finches" that are actually tanagers (but Chuck didn't know that). The first chapter of "On the Origin of Species" was based on his work with PIGEON breeding. It started as research & ended as a hobby.
WWII Allied advance troops had a communications challenge & they solved it with BIRDS🐦 and BRAS👙. Squad-level radios (SCR-300) were heavy (~40 lbs/18 kg), worn as a backpack. Allied paratroopers operating in Europe needed something light, compact. So they turned to homing pigeons.
