I don't think it's necessarily bad for economists to use their tools to study various questions of social science. The work is often interesting. At the same time, part of the reason it flourishes is ideological. Obviously!
What's real is these are legitimating myths that allow the laundering of system-justifying propaganda through the field of economics. For example, the message that drug users who OD should be left to die can be bolstered by the myth that only economists are rigorous enough to study public health.
