Erdogan is prone to hyperbole, but I don't think he's wrong here, as both have essentially become buffer states in the long-term confrontation that's brewing between Israel and Turkey.
It speaks to the double bind in multiple dimensions that many African governments face, caught between Trump's coercive diplomacy, China's deeply embedded economic presence, Trump's surprising popularity among their publics and the unpopularity of the terms he is trying to impose.
