We did a really interesting story a few years ago about how different whale falls around the ocean might actually create a kind of web that deep-sea species can hop between hakaimagazine.com/news/how-dea...
Genuine rewrite the textbooks discovery! 🧪🦑 The same team led last year's discovery of even deeper chemosynthetic animal communities. And they are in a crewed submersible, so they actually SAW THE WHALE GRAVEYARD!!! Can't wait for them to keep exploring!
Finally, footage from that new whale graveyard. The fact that fossils and fresh carcasses mix together in this spot is bonkers. But of course it makes sense, because the scavengers that live down there also need a steady supply over millions of years. They can't just suddenly adapt to the deep.

Whale graveyard discovered 7km under the sea
By sinking a dead whale to the bottom of the ocean and studying what comes to visit, scientists are learning more about how deep-sea ecosystems are related.

When rhizocephalan barnacles end up infecting a male crab, they routinely forcefem their hosts - but some crab species are more susceptible to rhizocephalan forcefem than others 🧪 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Researchers have catalogued dozens of new marine species found in the depths of Australia's most remote waters. The result is a window into a rarely glimpsed world.

This is why “more bees at all cost, everyone should have honeybees“ was a mistake imho. Domesticated bees already rival against wild bees and at worse spread illnesses. This is also why you shouldn’t give a wild/rescued bee any honey! Honey can transmit bee diseases as well

Petra linked this to me privately so I guess this week we're all learning about Deformed Wing Virus. It's horrible. It's widespread. And this study is 10+ years old so who knows what's the situation nowadays.
