As he puts it, Mobile Suit Gundam “was made in a cold room with a terrible schedule.” With the benefit of hindsight and less pressing deadlines, Yasuhiko believed he could correct some of these issues.

Fun fact: Even though he had to be talked into it, Yasuhiko was excited at the opportunity to revisit First Gundam. Looking back, despite its elevated reputation in pop culture, Yasuhiko saw 0079 more as incomplete (obviously, your mileage might vary), a show “full of contradictions.”

Keep in mind, though, that YAS had—and has—great respect for the source material and wanted to do right by it.

Inoue came up with the idea of starting up “an exclusive Gundam manga magazine” to essentially house Yasuhiko’s as-of-then unnamed manga. Despite initial hesitation from his peers at the company, he persisted. On June 25, 2001, the first issue of Gundam Ace hit magazine stands.
YAS had clear goals for this adaptation. He wanted to smooth out what he perceived as some of rougher edges of First Gundam, filling in plot holes, providing more sociopolitical context, eliminating unnecessary story beats, and overall, making a more streamlined story.
Thanks so much for having me, @giantrobotfm.bsky.social ! I hope the Patreon members enjoy this one, I had a ton of fun recording it! ✌️
