And now I think about that every year when other white people ask why we’re celebrating this. And it’s because from 1865-1965, when the Voting Rights Act passed, this was still the reality for Black Texans
A few years ago, when the push to make Juneteenth a federal holiday had really started to hit the news, I asked my dad what he knew about the holiday, as a white Texan man born in 1942. He said he was aware of it as “the one day a year Black people were allowed in all the parks”
