🕷️ A comprehensive review of pseudoscorpion dispersal via hitchhiking on flies has been conducted, incorporating records spanning over 260 years. ➡️ Check out our guest blog post, written by Jana Christophoryová of Comenius University Bratislava: blog.pensoft.net/2026/05/13/t...
🚨 Lifer alert! 🚨 Check out this deer bot #fly that @dradriansmith.bsky.social found while we were hunting bugs - my first time getting pics of a wild adult of this family! It's a convincing bee mimic, whose babies live in the sinuses & throats of deer 😋 👀 #Oestridae: #Cephenemyia phobifer NC, USA
True flies (order #Diptera) are amazing & under appreciated! Most people think only of house flies, but there's >160,000 described spp. w/many more to be discovered. They go by many names including mosquitoes, gnats, & midges. Check out the blue eyes on this predatory midge #Ceratopogonidae #FlyWeek
We missed #WorldRobberFlyDay but it's still #FlyWeek! Check out this amazing robber fly [ #Asilidae ] from Kerala, India 😮❗😍 Thanks to Dr. P.K. Sumodan for sharing with the society and thanks especially to Lakshmi Prajath for photographing this beauty! 📸
#WorldRobberFlyDay On this special day, I will be posting assassin / robber fly species from every continent/zoogeographical region in #USNMDiptera collection at Smithsonian NMNH (with a few exceptions) for Asilidae + Leptogastrinae Gonioscelis sp from Namibia
#WorldRobberFlyDay Afrotropical Leptogastrinae: male Euscelidia procula (Walker, 1849) (Leptogastrinae, USNMENT00876442) from Mozambique - more info at n2t.net/ark:/65665/3... #asiloidflies
A native Pheidole dentata big-headed ant, attacked by a pair of ant-decapitating phorid flies at UT’s Brackenridge field lab.
Most surprising find @ bee aggregation '26 were lots of thick-headed #flies emerging! They're parasitoids of adult bees, grabbing them mid-air to inject eggs into the abdomen. Eww but cool! (I guess not if you're a bee 😂) Here's one on a flower: flic.kr/p/2ocMhfV #Conopidae: #Zodion NC, USA
Ohhhh tomorrow you can listen to Lee Davies and myself talking flies and fungi with Sue Perkins & Sara Pascoe Nature Table - Tuesday April 14th - 6.30pm on BBC Radio 4 🪰🍄 Much fun was had recording this 😎 www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...
