In college, I studied under Peter Bondanella — one of the world’s foremost scholars on Machiavelli and Fellini.
Since he knew him personally, I once asked him what Fellini was like.
“Just a man,” Peter said with a shrug.
Now that I work in Hollywood, I get what he meant.
Whether you agree with his (self-admittedly) cantankerous opinions, Harlan Ellison was truly a force to be reckoned with.
I think about this interview often — especially when young writers ask me how to make a living as one.

When I first opened the NextDoor app, I remember reading a completely serious post that said:
“I knew this neighborhood was going downhill when all the songbirds left and all I saw was crows”
I think about that a lot.
It’s always worth remembering that kindness is free, but pays great dividends.
The funny thing about animation is that sometimes you see extremely cool things you can’t talk about for a long time.
