Comment: NZ's first Paris target was set by National's John Key, who always expected to send billions offshore to meet it.
Similarly, durable replacement don't emerge whole cloth out of the ether; near-term investments in durable CDR are needed alongside reversible CDR to help scale the technology and drive down costs.
Thanks Kate Newton /John Campbell of @rnzrss.bsky.social for a really clear explainer of NZ owing 5 billion (or a year’s worth of emissions) to meet what we pledged when we signed Paris. At same time current govt still plans to pay 1 billion on an LNG terminal research indicates is unnecessary?!
