They’re just fancy database skins linked to word. IMO they’re fantastic for citing as I write without breaking up the flow of writing. Zotero also does a good job of managing multiple media types (pdfs, webpage screenshots, etc) all in one place.

There’s a lot of them out there that are still “dumb” the Bosch system on my Tern just plugs in to charge and has a basic readout of speed and distance based on a wheel/disc-based magnet and sensor.
…the manger doesn’t try to infer anything, it’s just got a simple search function so you can find the text you want to cite.

…when you’re in word and need to cite something you can search for it or just highlight in zotero and it drops in the citation. One advantage is if you decide to publish somewhere with a different citation style you can switch it in the settings and adjust all citations in the doc at once…
I can speak for zotero, referenced here in the thread a few times, it’s not AI, it it’s got some browser tools that help download pdfs and extract embedded citations if they’re available, and you can keep all your docs in a folder structure with tags and other searchable fields…
