the most surreal thing about this era of open yelling about masculinity is that, if you grew up anything like I did, you were exposed to several sets of standards of masculinity and would be hard pressed to identify which of them the Paxtons and Millers of the world are living up to

Two more signs, a front and back
SF Stand Up For Science, a few of the signs.
Over the weekend, LeMonde and @francoisdm.bsky.social published a VERY interesting image of what appears to be some of Iran's highly enriched uranium enroute to a secure base in Isfahan last June.
Amidst all this talk of seizing Iran's uranium, it's worth discussing in a little more detail...🧵
We need to talk a bit about how utterly absurd the March heatwave was in the USA.
This heatwave would have been impossible without a boost from climate change, but even with climate change it remains a deeply unlikely event.
A thread looking at some of the numbers.

Great piece out today in Physics Today on historical origins, contemporary relevance, & fundamental irreplaceability of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which remains at imminent risk of dismantling for partisan political reasons.
A University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa study shows that Waikīkī faces increasing sewage flood risks from sea-level rise through storm-drain backflow and groundwater emergence. The findings call for updated flood strategies focused on contamination, not just surface damage and economic loss.
When I wrote my critique of a possible special operation to take Iran's enriched uranium, I had to guess at the containers that might be used for the UF6, which would constitute a significant part of the load. 1/

When federal agents came to the home of David Morens on Monday with an arrest warrant for allegedly concealing federal records related to the debate about the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, they behaved as if the 78-year-old retired scientist was a violent criminal. https://scim.ag/4cIEXhc

A new study by University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa researchers revealed that Waikīkī is facing a fundamental shift in flood hazards as sea levels rise–transitioning from a flooding that is driven primarily...
There are folks out there dreaming about a daring raid by special ops forces to grab Iran’s stock of enriched uranium. Trumpies would like to grab the Ayatollahs’ goodies. People concerned about proli...
Soon after winning the Texas Republican Senate primary runoff, Ken Paxton attacked Democratic nominee, state Rep. James Talarico as "too low-T for Texas," putting manhood front and center in the race. n.pr/4a5uElp

Oil just dropped 11% on news the Strait of Hormuz is “open.”
But “open” doesn’t mean normal.
Right now, 800+ tankers are stuck in the Gulf. The strait is effectively a 3-lane highway merging into 1. ~400 loaded ships trying to exit. ~100 empty ships willing to enter.
3 years until normal.
