Not a defense of Baker's book or his interpretation of Marat, btw. I definitely don't think the book's argument justifies its length. I've also only made it 1/2 way through. But, I'm not reviewing it. Reviewers should read the whole book & engage w/the book's argument. Feels dumb to even write that.

Struggling to articulate what The Cheese and the Worms meant to me when I first read it. It wasn't about microhistory, or Menocchio, or the Inquisition. More just an awareness that, wow, there are *so many* ways to write history, so many stories to tell from the sources we have. RIP.
