I'm a post-Tolkein girlie at heart. Second world, big map, conlangs, foreign cultures, the works.
I also love George R.R. Martin style family and political drama.
I don't care about magic systems or fantasy creatures. For me it's all about culture and world.
I write journey fiction.
BTW if you're into modern fantasy and anything in this thread sounds interesting, I am looking for beta readers for my novel 👀
I haven't read a Jessica Amanda Salmonson book yet, maybe its time to try that.
But I'm so damn sick of Standard Average European vibes and the modern landscape is well-charted terrain.
Goddamn do I want transfemme modern epic fantasy so badly.
From a formal standpoint - and this is where my work is closest to Tolkein - I would say mythopoeia.
I'm a big student of the classic epics, especially Gilgamesh, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid. I've read the bible cover to cover. One of my favorite books is Paradise Lost, and I love Tolstoy.
I know the whole reason I went off to write an epic fantasy novel was cause in three years of searching I could not find a single transfemme-authored epic high fantasy novel in my preferred subgenre.
But hngnh I want it *ravenously,* god do I wish more trans authors wrote epic fantasy.
"Write the book you want to read," yeah yeah, I can only read my own work so many times.
I might need to do a deep dive into the history of trans fantasy.
You know what, this worked for me once before: does anyone know of any small presses that would be into a very postmodern retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice
Happy trans day of invisibility. I am hiding in my bedroom. Please don't perceive me.
