This is why I've regularly taken law students to housing court to observe, and why I ask anyone involved in housing work to attend at least one eviction calendar in full.
I am once again begging journalists to pay attention to what happens in eviction courtrooms.
A judge just told a tenant who was disputing owing rent that their only option was to pay what was demanded or agree to move out. "Have a trial" was not an option the judge provided.
