The NYT is being disingenuous here. The AMA has *always* said that gender-affirming surgeries should generally be reserved for adults. That's part of why so few kids get them!

As the parent of transgender child, I can testify that the standard of care was EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE even before the recent moral panic. I cannot stress this enough. EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE. Anyone who says otherwise is completely uninformed or blatantly lying. Period.
