It's easy to understand why Starmer would not be particularly popular. It is actually pretty hard to understand why he would be one of the most unpopular PMs in history.

There is no mystery - there's just many reasons to hate him. Personal failings aside (poor comms, no clear plan, etc) he fundamentally misunderstood his own voter coalition. I mean on top of pursuing policies clearly unpopular with his own voters, you can see it just in how labour talks about

Dozens of people brutally dunking on this guy with variations of "Of course it's obvious what happened to Starmer, he sucks and we all hate him," apparently unable to understand that they are demonstrating the mystery rather than answering it

Seen from abroad it's hard to make sense of what happened to Starmer. Big majority, centrist, fairly united party, no obvious blunders -- and somehow it went off the rail in just a few years. Political scientists will have their work cut out on this one.
