This has always been true. In my 20 years in education, every attempt to create equity has been met with accusations from the right of dumbing things down, creating special privileges, "dividing," etc. In particular when those efforts have worked. See Tuscon La Raza Studies as just one case study.

If helping underrepresented students succeed is now considered suspicious, maybe the problem isn’t the outreach. Maybe it’s what some people are afraid that outreach might accomplish.
