When I first read The Magician's Nephew, I had no idea who the Bastables were or why they were hunting for treasure. And then, as a tween/teen, I stumbled across an old copy of the Wouldbegoods....found a book explaining the Wars of the Roses....picked up Pilgrim's Progess.
