It's interesting that Iran went after US bases rather than Gulf energy. Given Trump's reluctance to go back to war, it's probably less likely to cause further escalation unless the Iranians managed to kill more American soldiers

If you watched the last 24 hours of news from some bunker in Tehran, how would you not conclude that you're winning the war? And if you think you're winning the war, why would you be willing to make significant concessions?
This is an extremely concise description of the way de escalation happens in foreign affairs. It is also why just saying “nah wasn’t a big deal all fine over here” after having personnel rescued after crashing their helicopter into the sea comes across not just as weak but *undignified*.
