Neutrality is no longer an option. AI systems trained on data that wrongfully positions LGBTQ lives as ‘fringe’ or treats our equal rights as ‘controversial,’ or that fail to catch sophisticated disinformation about LGBTQ people, threaten our health, safety, and civil rights.
In this inaugural report, GLAAD presents the tangible and unique ways that AI both impacts and shapes perceptions about our community.

The AI industry can and must follow best practices. Biased training data can be corrected. Content moderation can protect LGBTQ voices instead of silencing them. Privacy safeguards and red-teaming with LGBTQ communities can be built in from day one.
✅ Respect data privacy: adopt privacy-by-design, minimize data collection, never infer identity without consent
✅ Engage LGBTQ communities from the earliest stages of development
GLAAD’s key recommendations for AI developers and deployers:
✅ Fix the foundation: ensure inclusive LGBTQ representation in training data
✅ Don't automate discrimination: audit agentic AI before it scales
✅ Maintain human oversight in content moderation
AI is already shaping how people find information, apply for jobs, and engage with the world. The question isn’t whether AI will affect LGBTQ lives. It’s whether companies will build it responsibly.
