I wish schools would do better job at this. If you insist on creative writing assignments, actually teach students how to write, rather than teach them how to pick "better" words. And that starts with teaching people how to read and think about what they're reading without sucking the joy out of it

It's taught as though the word choice itself is the issue and that just replacing the word will fix it, when the reality is that it depends on so many other things. What type of word is being repeated? Is it being repeated deliberately? Is the writer even aware that they've repeated the word?
