This image took 84 hours of observation to create. The amount of time taken is especially impressive when you consider the fact that the Medulla Nebula actually appears to be about the size of the full moon in our sky. Despite that, it's still very dim. (3/3)

This photo wasn't taken with one of the space telescopes you usually see images from. Instead, it's from a ground-based telescope. The longer a telescope looks at an object, the more light it collects. Add all that light together and you can get a stunning image, even from Earth. (2/3)

The bar is thought to fuel star formation within it, as its structure will channel the interstellar gas required to form a star from further out in the spiral arm towards the center. (3/3)

A barred spiral galaxy is a galaxy with the classic spiral shape as well as an elongated bar of densely packed stars across its core. The Milky Way is a barred spiral as well, though we didn't know that for sure until 2005, as it's pretty difficult to see the Milky Way from the inside. (2/3)

An up close look into a barred spiral galaxy courtesy of James Webb. This is NGC 1365, and incredibly huge galaxy that's over 200,000 light-years in diameter. That's twice the size of the Milky Way! (1/3)

We're less than a week away from the summer solstice. But as the north experiences the start of summer, the south instead has the start of winter. What causes two different seasons in two different parts of the world?

This striking image features the Medulla Nebula, a brain-shaped nebula. The nebula is a supernova remnant, a type of gas cloud left behind from an explosion at the end of the life a massive star. The supernova that created this nebula occurred about 10,000 years ago. (1/3)

The universe is 14 billion years old. That's old. So old, that the mind has trouble comprehending just how long it is. To better understand this age, we can condense the entire history into 1 year. That's the cosmic calendar.

Amid the Stars
In less than a week, on Sunday, June 21, summer will begin, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. But in the south, it will actually be the start of winter. Just how is it possible that two different p...
