Marine ecosystems in Northern Australia are experiencing increasingly extreme conditions due to compounding climate events, including temperature fluctuations, dehydration, turbidity, and hydrologic disconnection, which significantly affect species populations.

If you’re a tiny prawn, barramundi or rare sawfish in a northern Australian gulf, you can’t easily swim south to escape the heat.

Our Science paper finds common characteristics of tropical semi-enclosed marine systems globally eg land barriers to escape warming waters 🌡️, monsoons, changing currents, cyclone 🌀 impacts and large river influxes 💦 that combine to change temperature, exposure, turbidity & hydrologic connection
Our study included a research survey of a juvenile tiger prawn nursery area. We found a physical regime shift (more La Nina’s, more cyclone impacts, more rainfall) plus increased temperatures reduced mature seagrass habitat and led to a stepwise decrease in Australia’s endemic brown tiger prawn 🦐

In the wild, nesting chinstrap penguins get more than 11 hours of sleep per day—but not all at once.
According to a 2023 Science study, these birds nod off thousands of times per day, but for only around 4 seconds at a time.

The school says it will plant 526 trees to replace the ones the koalas are already using
Anthropogenic ocean warming affects ecosystem functioning but is not necessarily the primary climate driver regulating tropical seas. Tropical semi-enclosed marine ecosystems are poorly understood, ge...
