I wrote a lot there but there is an easier way to describe it.
The UK media used the EU as a scapegoat for many problems we had & cause division.
Brexit was terrible for us & yes I think history played a small part too.

Some of the songs deserved nil point, but yes our media intentionally stoked up people about who was making/how decisions were made.
How we were losing rights, how Europe would let people get to the channel so they could cross to the UK.

That is very true, it was portrayed to the UK by "our media" as Europe demands we end our sovereignty, Europe will dictate this without you having a voice. Why does EU get to tell us this or that. They never mentioned what we got back in return for membership or value for money.
You're partially correct, we nearly always got low points before Brexit too.
Granted some were deserved.
