This #RealBuddhaQuotes is spoken to King Śuddhodana, the Buddha’s father. On #FathersDay, it offers a moving image: the Buddha, once his father’s son, is now described as one who cares for all beings “like a loving father” — with compassion, patience, and the wish to liberate.
Bob was among the distinguished participants who gathered at the landmark 2009 conference in Bir, India, which helped lay the foundations for what would become 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha.
Bob’s contributions to the preservation, study, and translation of Buddhist literature have left an enduring mark on the field and on all who value these precious teachings.
May this verse remind us of the many forms love can take: as a parent, as a child, as a guide, and as compassion extended to all beings.
We are also grateful for his translation of the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, which is published in the 84000 Reading Room and continues to inspire readers today.
He shared a deep commitment to the translation of the Tibetan canon and devoted much of his life to advancing that vision through scholarship and collaboration.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, students, colleagues, and the many people whose lives were touched by his wisdom, energy, and dedication. May his legacy continue to benefit beings for generations to come.
For decades, Bob dedicated himself to making Buddhist wisdom accessible to new generations of readers and students. Through his teaching, writing, translations, and leadership, he helped introduce countless people around the world to the richness of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
In Memoriam: Robert Thurman We are saddened to learn of the passing of Robert A. F. Thurman, a pioneering scholar, translator, teacher, and lifelong advocate for the study and transmission of Tibetan Buddhism.
