It took me 12 years to write my first book.
Actually, if you count the false starts, detours to chronic illness, etc, its probably more like 16 years.
Unfortunately, I dont know if there is room for people like us any more--I still don't know how Im here some days.

And it's not only the methods, theory, or philosophy, it's the time. One of my advisors told me being a good historian is about accumulation, you just have to KNOW so much, read so much, accumulate so much before you can see. It takes a long time to do history, it's not something you dip into.
