Now that cow vigilantes have arrived in force in West Bengal with the election of Adhikari’s Hindu fascist government this route is under even greater threat. The delicate rhythms of post-partition bordered life is under enormous pressure and someone should be studying it.

It is also a hugely violent and dangerous smuggling route because of the militarization of the border. Farmers and petty smugglers regularly die as a result of cattle running astray on the border and drawing military fire.
As others who have studied the effect of cow vigilantes on rural communities have shown, the disruption of the beef market has led to feral herds running rampant over farmland ruining crops. This route is a lifeline for rural communities along it across eastern India.
