Something I hadn’t considered: A Chinese researcher told me that if you want to do science in China, you need a VPN because you need access to a lot of banned websites, including Google Scholar.

There is the obvious issue of freedom of speech and human rights, but the US is also moving in the wrong direction in this regard. In general, Chinese science needs to be way less misogynistic and hierarchical, and students need to be given the freedom to be creative and not work like robots. 2/2
