Two more rescue boats go out to save SAR-07's crew. As they carry out the rescue, Russia strikes again — hitting one of them with a UAV. This time two rescue crew are killed and two more seriously hurt. (Casualty figures from Ukraine's formal complaint to the IMO, the UN's maritime agency.)

This is what's known as a "double tap" strike: a target is hit, then hit again as rescuers arrive — deliberately targeting the people who come to save the wounded. Long documented in drone warfare on land; here it plays out at sea.

These weren't warships. Ukraine's sea-rescue boats wear bright hi-vis paint and big "SAR" markings — Search & Rescue, the sea equivalent of an ambulance. Per the Second Geneva Convention, rescue craft must never be attacked.
