Lovely night in Minneapolis astride the Great River. At right is the original United States as defined by the 1783 Treaty of Paris, at left is the 1804 Louisiana Purchase. All of this was once Dakota land.

The "Father of the Waters" statue in Minneapolis City Hall does notably feature an alligator, in no small part because it was snatched up relatively cheaply by MN notables when New Orleans (which had originally commissioned the work) was unable to pay.
