I don't mind it, but I think one thing about playing so many games made by small teams or solo developers is getting used to that liiiitle bit of jank that equivalent to VHS static, it makes the medium feel more genuine to me.
Mina the Hollower is still a great game btw. It's really tight and cute, the bosses and characters are all really well made and fit with the world beautifully. It's a fully realised space and the ways in which you can tackle problems is very open-ended!
it also leaves you more bereft and lost when life gets complicated; which it will sooner or later. Difficult art that asks difficult things of you has the potential to transform your point of view in a way that escapist art fundamentally avoids.
It feeling over-designed isn't a point to it's detriment, it's just something I've noticed! Slay the Spire 1 and 2 both benefitted greatly from early access player feedback and metrics cause it allowed the devs to balance things the way they wanted. Just funny how this manifests in an action game.
Mina fits in the same vein, anything and everything I do in that game feels like it's at one point been considered. I think because it spent so long in development that the designers and testers did literally everything they could find, or nearly everything, and shaved down the rough edges.
A very sincere thank you to whoever bought my silly videogame about shooting robots 🙏
Part of me missed that texture that Hades 1 had, that feeling that sometimes you were pushing the boundaries of what a build could do and really breaking the game (In a way that The Binding of Isaac does very naturally).
Hades II released in early access which gave the directors and designers plenty of information and gameplay feedback to work with when it came to balancing items and I definitely felt that while playing, like the whole experience was very smooth throughout, way smoother than Hades 1
I'm 5/6 towers through Mina the Hollower right now and I'm really enjoying it, but I have some Thoughts about a vibe I get from this, and from Hades II which centres around games that feel like they've been over-designed in certain ways.
