Spent my lunch break trying to step on as many of these as possible. This scarlet bug and the smaller, younger, black versions are the nymphs of the dreaded spotted lanternfly, a highly invasive species in North America. PLEASE SQUISH ON SITE. Instead of flying, they very quickly hop out of the way.

Rolling or dragging something over them seems to be the easiest way.
