I mean, they also catch ppl who like parallelism and em dashes. The former is highly encouraged in high school essay writing.

Those detectors are also immensely easily to beat if one is using an LLM to cheat and write essays because all you have to tell it to do is "de-ai" the language and grammar and it'll remove common tells like em dashes and parallel structure. The detectors catch only the laziest bums.
