🧪 Whale hormones… from less than a grain of rice
A new method can measure 8 hormones (like stress & pregnancy) from tiny blubber samples, meaning more insight from every biopsy.
🐋 Stranded whales showed higher stress
🇳🇴 ONE sample can now reveal pollution, diet & health
Big step for conservation

Great days at the 1st Andenes whale summit, showcasing #whale #research in #Norway. Even treated to 20 sperm whales after talks 🤩🐳
I shared #PhD results about effects of unregulated whale watching. But a great reminder of the benefits of ww when done sustainably and as a research platform 👏🐳🐋

Steroid hormones are useful indicators of health and fitness in marine mammals, but measurements are often limited by sample size. This new #Toolbox article presents a new method for analysing steroid hormones in small blubber samples in four whale species. 🐋
