A M6.2 earthquake below southern Italy is a reminder of the subduction zone lurking beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea. At 250 km depth, this is not one of Italy’s dangerous earthquakes. But it did lead us to a *totally normal* conceptual model for the wildly complicated tectonics of the Mediterranean!
A swarm of small earthquakes has been rattling Brawley, California, with more than 300 events recorded so far. What’s going on and what should we expect?

A M6 earthquake just struck the island of Hawaii. Although Hawaii is primarily volcanic, there is a record of surprisingly large earthquakes here, too — up to M7.9. Why do these occur, and how does this latest M6.0 fit in?

A M5.7 earthquake occurred in west-central Nevada yesterday evening - close to a very similar earthquake about one year earlier. Can we tell what faults they occurred on, and were they related?

Did you feel last night’s M4.6 earthquake in the Bay Area? If so, you’re not alone: more than 32,000 people have reported it so far. We explore the geology to try to figure out what fault ruptured, and what to expect.

A M7.4 earthquake offshore northern Japan today led to a megaquake advisory: a warning that the risk of a M8+ earthquake is ten times higher than usual. What does that mean, and how does this event fit into the mosaic of earthquakes in this seismically active region?

A M6.1 earthquake struck northwest of Cuba today - the largest earthquake on record for the Gulf of Mexico. Why did this unusual earthquake occur? Our search for an answer takes us through 200 million years of geological history.

A M7.4 earthquake in the Molucca Sea, Indonesia yesterday caused building damage and raised a moderate tsunami. One person is reported dead. What do we know about the causes and impacts of this event?
