Re: 'you could just as well find similarities to human output' - sure. humans do sometimes take each other to court over 'substantial similarity' to smth protected. Whether or not a given sample was memorized or just present in training, and whether that matters, is a part of stakeholder negotiation

Seems like this debate depends on assertion that it's impossible to establish causal relations btw training samples & outputs. Causal data attribution has a long history, its practicality for LLMs is an empirical issue. We cite our sources & will have to agree to disagree Thanks for the discussion!
