This week, we installed sensors at our EXPLORATION experimental site to monitor soil water dynamics across newly planted tree species mixtures. It’s going to be a busy summer! 🧪🌳
Absolutely incredible.
NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman, who commanded Artemis II, took this footage from the far side of the Moon with his iPhone.
Watch with sound on.
➡️💻 Join our upcoming webinar to hear the latest research on drought impacts in UK forestry, including new drought risk indices and decision-support tools designed to help assess tree species suitability under future climates.

A podcast all about drought (and cosmic rays 🙂)
Yesterday (despite the miserable weather!) we installed a LICOR evapotranspiration sensor and a new anemometer on our eddy covariance system monitoring a young Sitka spruce stand. The data will allow us to compare the sensors in preparation for future forest research projects. 🌳🧪
You won't want to miss this! Keep your calendars free and hopefully see you in Switzerland in October 🌳🍁🌐🧪
New study from BIFoR FACE! "Elevated CO2 Increases the Canopy Temperature of Mature Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak)"
Our EXPLORATION project aims to generate a clearer understanding of how mixed‑species stands in newly established forests respond to drought 🌳
In November, stakeholders helped shape the next phase of this project in a workshop hosted by @drgeorgexenakis.bsky.social 🤝

Only nine conifer species make up almost all UK commercial forests. Sitka spruce accounts for over half of all timber harvested.
To boost resilience to climate change, Forest Research and partners (Forestry and Land Scotland & Forestry England) planted 17 emerging species over 9 large trial sites.
🚨Job opportunity🚨
We are hiring a 3yr research technician. If you love fieldwork, are passionate about forests & mountains, and want to up-skill in remote sensing, sensor networks and running field experiments this could be the dream job for you!

Explore plant interactions in forest environments at all levels from micro- to macro-scales and across the whole spectrum of plant biology.
We investigated the impact of high atmospheric CO2, similar to that predicted for 2050, on tree canopy temperature dynamics of mature pedunculate oak using long-term, high-frequency thermal infrared ...
