🌊 The ocean absorbs >90% of Earth’s excess heat, and our ability to track it depends on a fragile global network of floats, ships and sensors. New research warns that cuts to the Global Ocean Observing System could make climate signals indistinguishable from noise. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Because we have access to many years of freely available satellite data, it's also possible to compare coastal change and track the flow of sediment over time: for example, areas that are gaining (blue) or losing (red) sediment between 2021 and 2024:

🌊 Research out today reveals a potential 'missing link' in Antarctic sea-ice melt: ocean waves. By flooding, pulverising and even 'greening' ice floes, waves reduce reflectivity and accelerate seasonal melt, helping explain gaps in climate models. Learn more ▶️ antarctic.org.au/from-floodin...

Climate change impacts are here, but public support for action remains polarized. Which climate messages move people? In a ~13,500-person megastudy, we tested 10 of the most-cited messages. Six increased pro-environmental attitudes in the U.S.—but only by 1–4 percentage points. 🧵

The European Commission and Australia have finished negotiations to work together on the Horizon Europe program. This is a large project for research and innovation that has a total budget of 93.5 billion euros. Australia will focus on the second part of the program, which covers important areas like climate, energy, and digital technology. This new agreement is a big step for the scientific partnership between the two regions. Starting in January 2027, Australian organizations will have the same rights to EU funding as countries that are members of the European Union. This makes it easier for them to lead research teams and work on important scientific projects. Currently, many countries outside the EU already work with Horizon Europe. Australia has shown strong research skills in the past, with a high success rate for their project applications.
